NAME REPORT · SAMPLE
Someone who carries distance lightly.
Written for Emily Carter, who moved to Shanghai two years ago and wanted a name that sounded like her — without becoming a translation of her.
Le texte du rapport est en anglais pour l'instant ; la version française arrive.
Chaque caractère est rattaché à un vers réel des poètes Tang et Song.
01
Before the name, there is a family line — and a river.
沈 began as a place. A branch of the Zhou royal house was enfeoffed at Shen, in what is now Pingyu County, Henan. When the state was absorbed by Chu in the sixth century BCE, its people kept the name of the place they came from. That is how a kingdom became a surname.
The character itself carries water: 氵 on the left, 冘 lending the sound. Not a rushing river — a deep, slow one. In classical Chinese, 沈 also means deep, and by extension, steady.
In modern China, 沈 is a quiet, literary surname. It is the surname of 沈括, the eleventh-century polymath who wrote the Dream Pool Essays, and of 沈从文, whose novel Border Town is still taught in schools. Writers more often than generals.
02
One character, doing the work of a whole sentence.
Far away — distance held without hurry.
SourceSu Shi, 遥想公瑾当年: “thinking back to Gongjin in those years.” Also 逍遥 in Zhuangzi — wandering with nowhere to be.
A two-character name has nowhere to hide: the surname carries the family, and this one character has to carry the person. 遥 carries the distance — and refuses to complain about it.
03
3 · 2. Low, then rising — two beats, almost exactly the shape of “Emily”.
04
On a business card it is two characters. In a conversation it is a small story.
With only one given character, there is no second word to explain the first. 遥 has to do it alone — and it does. The 辶 radical is movement, not loss; it is the walking, not the leaving.
A name that means distance could read as melancholy. This one doesn't, because the distance is held rather than suffered. For someone nine thousand kilometres from home, that is the useful part: the name does not pretend. It says you know exactly how far it is — and you are still standing.
“Distance, carried lightly. That is the whole name.”
05
Four places where the name does most of its work.
沈遥 · Shěn Yáo — keep the tone marks; they are the difference between a name and a guess.
沈遥 (Emily). Chinese contacts will use the Chinese name; international ones keep Emily.
「你好,我叫沈遥,遥远的遥。」 One character is easy to spell out, and it buys you ten seconds.
Emily Carter · 沈遥 — a quiet signal that you are not a visitor.
06
If wood is needed, 桐 or 棠 are natural swaps; if you want a firmer close, 沈舟 gives the name a boat instead of a distance.

Names are usually given to you. This one you chose.
Two characters is short. People will remember it after hearing it once — and then they will ask what 遥 means.
You will say: far away. And then you will notice that you have just described where you are, and that it sounds like a place you chose.
